Playing backgammon is a great experience and with an element of skill involved that can mean the difference between winning and losing. Here are some useful tips that will help you to dominate a game:
From the earliest possible moment, you should start making points inside your home board using the stacks of checkers on your 6 and 8 points. Any dice roll where the two numbers are two apart, such as 1 and 3, 2 and 4 etc will make a point inside. The more points made inside your home board, the more difficult it is for your opponent to re-enter the game after being hit.
Double sixes early on allow you to make both the 7 point and the 18 point making life difficult for your opponent and an early escape for your two checkers on the 24 point.
If a bad throw of the dice means you have to leave one or two blots, it is best to leave them as far away from your home board as possible, preferably in your opponents home board if your 24 point checkers are still in there.
Always try to leave the minimum number of blots where possible.
If you can make all the points in your home board and then hit your opponent, they cannot play until you open one. This is a perfect situation for you to move all your checkers inside and begin bearing off and could lead to Gammon or Backgammon.
With all points made and you begin bearing off, beware leaving a blot for your opponent to hit upon re-entering. If you have a situation where the bearing off of two checkers will leave one blot, try moving one checker and bearing off only one, thus preserving the made point.
Similarly, when bearing off in this situation and you throw two low numbers, it is best to move the two checkers on the highest point rather than bearing them off. This allows your opponent to re-enter on a high point, meaning they cannot get lucky and hit you before you bear all your checkers off.
