The basic strategy in backgammon is to get all of your checkers into your home board and bear them off before your opponent does. This can be accomplished by careful play and relying on the favourable roll of the dice to move your checkers home and bear off without incident. Alternatively you can play a more aggressive hitting strategy where you take more chances in order to play for the higher stakes of a Gammon or Backgammon.
Either method has pitfalls that you should be aware of before commencing on your chosen strategy.
A seemingly safe game, whereby you simply rely on good dice scores to race home can be upset by making just one bad dice roll which causes you to leave one or more blots. This creates an opportunity that your opponent can seize upon by hitting your checkers and rendering you out of play.
A more aggressive form of play is often preferred in which you are less reliant on luck and you create situations that make it more difficult for your opponent to win. This involves hitting whenever you get the chance while working to make points in your home board. Remember that the more aggressively you play the more open you will leave yourself to counter-hits from your opponent. It is better to exercise some moderation and avoid leaving too many blots.
