How to Play Roulette / Rules

Roulette Game infoSee our top ten online casinos list

The basic rules of roulette are the same for both European and American versions of the game and are mainly to do with when and how the placing of bets is done.

In real world casinos, the croupier will call “no more bets” before the wheel is set spinning and this signifies that no further bets may be placed. In the online version of the game, this is not an issue as you must always place your bets before the game can commence.

So far as online roulette rules go, they nearly all pertain to the betting process, so you should know which types of bets you are able to place and what you should expect by way of winning odds.

The simplest bets to make on the roulette table are the evens bets, which all pay out at even money, so you bet a dollar to win a dollar. There are three variations of the evens bets and each has its own box labelled Red/Black, Low/High or Even/Odd. When you make an evens bet, if the ball lands on either of the zero or double zero pockets you will lose your bet.

Red/Black covers the two different colours of numbers, so if you place your chip in the red box and the ball lands on a corresponding red number on the roulette wheel you win.

Low/High covers either all the low numbers from 1 to 18 or all the high numbers from 19 to 36.

Even/Odd covers either even numbers of odd numbers with the exception of zero or double zero.

A dozen bet covers twelve numbers in one of the three groups running across the table that have boxes at their ends labelled “1st 12”; “2nd 12” and “3rd 12”.

A column bet is another way of covering twelve numbers in one of the three main rows of numbers running long ways along the table by placing your chip in any of the three boxes at the ends of each of the rows which are labelled “2 to 1”. If the ball lands on any of the numbers in your row, you win at 2:1 odds.

A line bet allows you to cover six numbers in adjacent lines of three numbers by placing your chip on the right hand line on the intersection of the two rows. If one of your numbers comes up, you win at odds of 5:1

A five bet can only be played on an American roulette table, as you cover numbers 1, 2 and 3 as well as both zero and double zero. You do this by placing your chip on the right hand line between the 3 and double zero. If any one of the five numbers comes up, you win at 6:1 odds.

A corner bet is made when you place your chip at the intersection of four numbers. If any of the four numbers comes up, you win at 8:1 odds.

A street bet is where your chip covers three numbers by placing it on the right hand outer line next to the three numbers you wish to play. If any one of the three comes up, you win at odds of 11:1.

A split bet is where you place your chip on the line between two neighbouring numbers. Of either of the numbers comes up, you win at 17:1 odds.

A straight up bet is the most risky of all roulette wagers but also carries the best winning odds should your number come up. You make a straight up bet by placing your chip on any single number from 1 to 36, although you can also bet on either the zero or double zero pockets if you wish. If the ball lands on your chosen number you win at 35:1 odds.
