How to Play Craps / Rules

Craps Game infoSee our top ten online casinos list

The basic rules of craps are the same online as they are in brick and mortar casinos and are mostly concerned with when and how you should place bets and the various outcomes of the roll of the dice.

The shooter in the online game of craps is a computer, so the rules governing the shooter in a live casino do not apply online. However, the rolls of the dice themselves do have several rules attached.

The initial or come out roll of the dice begins the game and all initial bets must be placed before the dice are rolled. Once the come out roll is established and the result is not a seven, eleven, two, three or twelve, further bets may be placed in certain areas of the table. That is because these numbers will immediately win in the case of seven or eleven, or lose. If other numbers are thrown, what is called a point is established and further rolls of the dice are necessary to either match the point, or throw a subsequent seven. The exact nature of each roll is explained below in the table layout paragraphs.

The table layout displayed online is usually on half of the live craps table, which is set out in two areas which are a mirror of one another. Where you place your bets on the table, when and what you will win depend on the outcome of the roll(s) of the dice. Here are the main betting areas you’ll see on an online craps table and how the betting of each is carried out:

Pass:

The Pass Line is the most popular bet made in craps both in real casinos and online. By making a Pass Line bet, you are betting that a seven or eleven in thrown in the come out roll to win instantly. If a two, three or twelve is thrown you lose the bet. If any other number is thrown, a Point is established and further rolls are made. If a subsequent seven is rolled, you lose the bet but if a number matching the Point is rolled, you win. Pass Line bets pay out even money, so a $1 bet will win $1 plus your initial dollar is returned to you.

Don’t Pass:

A Don’t Pass Line bet is the opposite of a pass line bet and known as wrong betting because you are betting against the roll of the dice instead of with it. In this case, if a seven or eleven is rolled, you lose but if a two or three is rolled you win. If a twelve is rolled it is called a push and you simply get your bet returned. If another number is rolled a Point is established. If the next dice rolled matches the Point, you lose but if a seven is rolled, you win. Don’t Pass Line bets pay also pay even money.

Come:

Betting on the section of the table marked “Come” is done after the come out roll has established a point. If the next roll produces a seven or eleven, you win. If it produces a two, three or twelve you lose. Any other number rolled establishes the Come Point. If the next roll produces a seven you lose, if the Come Point is matched you win. Come bets pay even money.

Don’t Come:

This is the opposite of a come bet and is placed after the come out roll has established a Point. If the next roll is seven or eleven, you lose. If it is two or three you win and if a twelve is rolled it is a push. If a Come Point is established instead and the shooter’s next roll matches it, you lose but if a seven is rolled, you win. Don’t Come bets pay even money.

Pass Odds:

If you place a Pass Line bet and the shooter rolls a Point, you are able at most online casinos to place an additional bet called Pass Odds, otherwise known as “taking the odds” by placing a chip behind your Pass Line bet. If a seven is rolled next, the bet loses, but if the point is rolled again before a seven, the Pass Odds bet wins. The advantage is that there is a zero house edge on this bet, so you are paid out at true odds. The payout varies depending upon the Point. If it is a four or ten, the bet pays 2:1, a five or nine pays 3:2 and a six or eight pays 6:5.

Don’t Pass Odds:

Also known as “laying the odds”, this bet works the same way following a Don’t Pass Line bet after a point is established. If the Point is rolled again, the bet loses, but if a seven is rolled first, the bet wins at true odds. Payouts are the same as for Pass Odds depending upon the value of the Point.

Similarly, there are also Come Odds and Don’t Come Odds bets that work the same way to the above.

Place:

A place bet is one placed on a single or place number, which is any one of four, five, six, eight, nine or ten. If you select this bet, then if your number is rolled before a seven, you win. Payout odds are 7:6 for a six or eight, 7:5 for a five or nine and 9:5 for a four or ten.

Field:

A Field bet is one where you place your bet on any one of two, three, four, nine, ten, eleven or twelve and win or lose on the next roll. Payouts are evens except for two or twelve which are paid out at 2:1

Proposition bets:

These bets are laid on combinations of numbers and win or lose on the next throw. Bets such as Horn bets, which divides the wager between two, three, eleven and twelve. Another common proposition bet is the World bet which divides equally between two, three, seven, eleven and twelve.
