You are also playing against a computer, except in the case of a casino having a live dealer game. In such a case you should be aware that each hand is completely random and it is therefore more difficult to second guess what cards may be dealt next. Conversely, the game is more simplistic to play than in a real casino situation as the software calculates your winnings in a flash and if your hand has won, pays immediately following each hand.
The basic goal in blackjack is to get a better hand than the dealer by scoring as close to 21 as possible without going over. You can do this with two or more cards and you can bet varying amounts of money on each hand depending upon your budget and according to a set of simple rules which are set out in the next chapter.
